Counting with the Orbitape

Postby EtherGK » May 15th, 2011, 9:29 pm

I'm kind of confused, so let's say I measure my waist and it's 39.6 inches. The way I got that number was that it was 39 inches plus 6 little lines.

How exactly do I count the little lines if I'm doing it wrong? I'm not sure how I should be adding all these numbers together to make total inches.

Appreciate any help.

You have to see how many "little lines" there are.

My guess is that there will be 8 (each line is 1/8th of an inch). If that's the case, each line = 0.125". If there are 16 inches, then each is worth half that (0.0625").

If you're wondering why the degredations are such funny fractions, you're not alone (the majority of the world uses the Metric system).

Ah thank you, mind explaining the even littler lines underneath those?

Every time they double the numbers, so the fraction gets reduced by 1/2.

1 --> 1/2 --> 1/4 --> 1/8 --> 1/16 --> 1/32 --> 1/64
1 -> 0.5 -> 0.25 -> 0.125 -> 0.0625 -> 0.03125 --> 0.015625

For circumferance measurements, quarter inches are likely precise enough.

As a side note, this is why the imperial measurement system is terrible and not really used outside the US. The metric system is more logical and easier to use.
